Welcome to the Burghausen City Museum!
The Burghausen City Museum is located in the former bower (lady’s chambers) of the world’s longest castle. Founded in 1899, the museum’s vast collections provide an impressive overview of the history, art, and culture of Burghausen and its surrounding area.
With major refurbishments between 2011 and 2025, it has been distinguished by numerous interactive stations that entertain visitors while vividly bringing to life the world of the late Middle Ages as well as Burghausen’s urban and artistic heritage.
The Burghausen City Museum takes you on an exciting journey through time spread over four levels. All main exhibition texts are available in both English and German.
Step inside the Castle Life in the Late Middle Ages to discover how the wealthy dukes of Bavaria-Landshut once lived and celebrated in Burghausen — or try your hand at a virtual joust, lance at the ready!
If you love art, you will find beautiful works from past and present in Burghausen, City of Arts: from magnificent Baroque paintings and sculptures to romantic and modern pieces. The exhibition presents numerous artworks of Burghausen’s notable painter Johann Nepomuk della Croce (1736–1819). Since the 19th century, new and independent artistic personalities revitalised Burghausen’s art scene with fresh impulses.
Fascinating Urban History is the focus of the second floor. In the Middle Ages, Burghausen flourished as a residence, stronghold and trade centre. A large section is dedicated to the everyday life of Burghausen’s citizens in the early modern period. With the founding of Wacker Chemie in 1916, Burghausen entered the industrial age. Life under National Socialism is vividly illustrated using a walkable city map. An in-house cinema portrays the final decades of the 20th century.
Habitat Salzach-Wöhrsee unfolds the characteristic wildlife of Burghausen with informative as well as entertaining multimedia research stations. Through light projections, numerous taxidermy specimens, and interactive modules, visitors can discover fascinating facts about the Salzach River, the Wöhrsee basin, and its animal inhabitants. Meet the quirky Waldrapp bird — once nearly extinct and now the mascot of Burghausen.
Parking spaces are available directly in front of the castle entrance at Curaplatz, as well as in an underground car park on Marktler Straße. The walk to the museum takes approximately 15 minutes.
Please proceed through the castle grounds to reach the inner keep. After passing through the gate, turn right; the museum entrance will then be clearly visible.
The Burghausen City Museum can also be reached from the Stadtplatz (main square) via the Burgsteig, a short but steep path.
We want to be open and accessible to all visitors to ensure that the widest number of people can enjoy the building, collection and exhibitions. However, as the Burghausen City Museum is located within a historic building, there are naturally some limitations to accessibility which are unfortunately beyond our control. We apologise for the inconvenience.
The permanent exhibition extends across four levels. The first and second floors are accessible by lift, although please note that the lift has limited capacity. For wheelchair users, only the second floor’s permanent exhibition is fully accessible. If needed, the special exhibition can be reached via the Castle Museum’s lift, accessible vis-à-vis the City Museum.
